Ethel Cain Wiki

Preacher's Wife is an upcoming studio album by Hayden Anhedönia under her current stage name, Ethel Cain.

Preacher's Wife will be the second installment of a trilogy of albums that comprise the Ethel Cain Cinematic Universe. It will take place before the events of Preacher's Daughter, focusing on the mother of Ethel Cain, Vera Cain, the titular preacher's wife.

Background[]

Before Anhedönia shared the canonical story of Ethel Cain by releasing Preacher's Daughter in 2022, the persona of Ethel Cain was described as "the unhappy wife of a corrupt preacher"[1] in press.[2] Anhedönia would later announce her plans to create a trilogy of albums while doing press for Preacher's Daughter, which would include Preacher's Wife.[3]

Development[]

When Anhedönia first began publicly discussing Preacher's Wife, she disclosed that a prequel to Preacher's Daughter would come first, Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You.[4] The EP Perverts was released in the interim.

Preacher's Wife is not slated for release in the immediate future. In a July 2024 livestream, Anhedönia shared that she had not yet started writing the record.[5] In the same livestream, Anhedönia said that she will be working on Ethel Cain Cinematic Universe projects for the rest of her life.[5] In press for Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You Anhedönia once again spoke about the album, saying that she would not force herself to write it and will only begin when she is ready to.[6] She anticipates that it will come out in her thirties.[5][6]

Theme[]

The album will focus on Ethel Cain's mother, Vera Cain.[7] It will be the second installment of the trilogy after Preacher's Daughter.

While the record is presumably still unwritten, Anhedönia described the overarching themes of it in a 2022 interview:[3]

It's not about God and religion and angst. It's about sexual repression and going from a sheltered upbringing to an exploration of your own body and sexual expression and being a woman who wants and likes to have sex and feeling neglected by a lover. It’s kind of a horny romance: it's seductive, it's anxious, it's unsure of itself. This is a woman who does not think about God, this is a woman who's like, ‘Why doesn't my husband care about me?’ Her daughter's story was very much defeated and hopeful and angry. You know, chomping at the bit to get out. Whereas her mother is more like, ‘I'm trapped in this house [and] I'm also having to play the perfect wife and save face.’ It’s gonna be a grown woman type record.
