Preacher's Daughter is the debut studio album by Hayden Anhedönia under her current stage name, Ethel Cain. It was released on May 12, 2022, under her imprint label of AWAL, Daughters of Cain. It was immediately available digitally, and was later released on vinyl April 4, 2025.

Preacher's Daughter is a concept album, the first in a trilogy that will focus on three generations of Cain women. Preacher's Daughter focuses on the youngest, Ethel Cain. Upon its release, the album was met with acclaim from music critics, with many publications citing it as one of the best albums of the year. Three singles preceded the album, with the final single "American Teenager" becoming a standout hit that continues to be one of Anhedönia's most popular songs.

Background[]

Anhedönia links the creation of Preacher's Daughter to writing "A House in Nebraska" in February 2018. As she describes it, while looking for samples for a now-scrapped album about "angels and stuff,"[1] she discovered the piano loop that would inspire "A House in Nebraska."[2] Writing the song lead to a shift in Anhedönia's creative direction: she began working on a new record that would become Preacher's Daughter, all centered on the "proverbial house in Nebraska."[2] The origins of the album also tie back to a film script, and although a film has not come to fruition, Anhedönia stated that it is the "end goal" for the trilogy.

In 2019, Anhedönia reintroduced herself as Ethel Cain, releasing the EPs Carpet Bed and Golden Age the same year. Shortly after, she signed with Prescription Songs and Amigo Records and founded her own imprint label of AWAL, Daughters of Cain, under which Anhedönia released her third EP Inbred. These EPs were essential to the album process, as she was able to "test" ideas onto certain songs without putting them on the "main record."[3]

Development[]

Anhedönia continued to work on the record that would become Preacher's Daughter after writing "A House in Nebraska" in 2018. Most of it was written in Florida before she relocated to Indiana in the summer of 2020.[4] Several versions of the record were finished and scrapped over time, with Anhedönia placing the number of scrapped attempts at five or six.[5] In a 2021 promotional interview for Inbred, she shared that the record was nearly complete.[6] This version of the record reportedly had a running time of two and a half hours.[6]

During the development of the record Anhedönia would keep fans updated on the process. In a Tumblr post from late 2021, Anhedönia confirmed there was only a few months of production left and the album would be released in the summer.[7] On January 9, 2022, Anhedönia stated she had finished the album.[8] However, on January 19, 2022, Anhedönia's team shared on Twitter that she was still adding additional details.[9] Anhedönia finished the album in March 2022. By the end of the album process Anhedönia stated she didn't feel like Ethel Cain anymore, as if "she’s dead and gone and I’m just telling her story now."[10]

According to long-time fans, the album was originally intended to have 17 tracks, including "Stomping Ground" and "Waco, Texas." However, four tracks were scrapped. When the album was later revealed to only have 13 tracks, fans alleged that Anhedönia said a deluxe edition would be released with the four additional songs.[11] A deluxe version of Preacher's Daughter has never come to fruition.

Release and Promotion[]

In early 2022, Anhedönia's (now deleted) Twitter account was taken over by her team, with the account posting promotional media in anticipation of Preacher's Daughter's release. On February 17, 2022, Teeth Magazine published a fictional interview between character Ethel Cain and Silken Weinberg that introduced Ethel Cain's story.[20] On March 17, 2022, the first single "Gibson Girl" was released and the May 12, 2022 release of Preacher's Daughter was announced.[21] Its tracklist was shared the same day.[22] Prior to this announcement the name of the album had not been widely shared, as Anhedönia had referred to it as EC1. On March 23, 2022, the second and third singles – "Strangers" and "American Teenager" – were announced. "Strangers" was released on April 7, 2022, while "American Teenager" was released on April 21, 2022, with the latter's music video dropping on July 21, 2022.

Preacher's Daughter was released on May 12, 2022. Anhedönia played two album release shows in New York and Los Angeles the same month.[23] In anticipation of its release and throughout the months that followed, Preacher's Daughter was promoted through several interviews and editorials. It was toured through The Freezer Bride Tour, and later through the Blood Stained Blonde Tour in 2023.

Shortly after the release of Preacher's Daughter, Anhedönia began discussing her plans for a follow-up project that would serve as a prequel, revisiting Ethel Cain's teenage years.[24] This project later became Anhedönia's sophomore album titled Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You, released on August 8, 2025.

Vinyl copies of Preacher's Daughter were first shipped out on April 4, 2025, after having been announced in December of 2024.[25] The vinyl was originally planned for a January 17, 2025 release, but was pushed back due to high demand.[26] The physical releases sold 37,000 copies, and subsequently landed Preacher's Daughter at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top Album Sales chart. Anhedönia urged those interested in other analog formats of Preacher's Daughter to contact AWAL, Prescription Songs, and Amigo Records to produce them, although this has not come to fruition.

Narrative[]

Main Article: Ethel Cain Cinematic Universe

Preacher's Daughter is the first in a trilogy of albums that will tell the story of three generations of Cain women. These albums are part of an ongoing multimedia project fans have dubbed the Ethel Cain Cinematic Universe. Describing the trilogy, Anhedönia said:[27]

The story centers around three generations of women, and it starts with the youngest, the daughter. It’s pretty much just a classic American tale. A common theme that I like to write about is intergenerational trauma. Things that have been passed down through generations and how your parents’ or your grandparents’ actions can affect you. It’s very much about this lineage of women and how all their lives interconnect. Each album focuses on a different woman. I want to explore how your actions affect others and the relationship between a mother and her child and how things come full circle.

The record is set around 1991, a decade after the death of Ethel Cain's father, Rev. Joseph Cain, the town preacher.[20] Preacher's Daughter is a portrayal of Ethel Cain's life from the ages of 20 to 21.[28] The climax of the story is Cain's kidnapping and eventual murder. A missing person poster, one of the album's visuals, shows that Ethel Cain was last seen in Arlington, Texas on January 13th, 1991 in a Winn-Dixie parking lot.[29]

In "A House in Nebraska," Cain laments the departure of her lover, Willoughby Tucker. In "Hard Times" she recalls her father's sexual abuse toward her, and her complex feelings toward him. "Ptolemaea" is the climax of the album, depicting Cain's breaking point. The name Ptolemaea references the ninth circle of Hell in Dante's Inferno, which is for those who betray their guests (in this case Isaiah).[30] "August Underground," an instrumental track, portrays Cain's death at the hands of Isaiah. The title of the song is a reference to the faux-snuff film August Underground. The final two tracks are meant to take place after Cain's death as she reflects on her life.

Themes[]

As per previous projects in the Ethel Cain musical repertoire, Preacher’s Daughter is centred on themes of intergenerational trauma, cycles of violence, gender-based and sexual violence, religious trauma, substance use, identity, and the dark underbelly of the American dream. It can be considered part of the Southern Gothic artistic movement or subgenre, which is concerned with similar themes as they specifically manifest in the American South.[31] While Anhedönia has reservations about the term Southern Gothic,[32] she has described Preacher’s Daughter as a project that had to come from the South.[4]

Regarding the overall thematic message of Preacher’s Daughter, Anhedönia has described it as a “cautionary tale” across several interviews. Speaking to Billboard, she described the overarching message she hoped to convey as follows:[33]

It’s a big story. It’s this all-American girl who crumbles under the weight of God and country. The American Dream is unachievable — being a perfect daughter, a perfect Christian, all of these weights that are put onto young American people are impossible. I like to think of this album as a cautionary tale of what would happen if you don’t free yourself from these imaginary chains, in terms of religion, family and expectation.

Preacher's Daughter received a score of 82 out of 100 based on eight reviews from media aggregate site Metacritic, indicating "universal acclaim."[36] On the aggregator website AOTY the record received a score of 84 out of 100 and was marked as "must hear album."[34]

In a five-star review for DIY Magazine, Ben Tipple wrote that Anhedönia "has an unparalleled power to drag you into her world" and called her "an autobiographical embodiment of escape, and of a fresh start."[40] Gigwise named Preacher's Daughter "an American epic" and drew comparisons to Stephen King's Carrie, writing "Ethel Cain is only 24 and has already written something as striking and with as much potential for cultural impact [as Carrie]."[41] Crack writer Emma Garland called Anhedönia's voice "resplendent and seemingly infinite in register, and transforming this landslide of beauty and suffering into some of the most fearless songwriting in recent memory."[39]

Devon Chodzin of Paste wrote that "where one may knock some of the power ballads for sameness, one might instead find consistency, an album grounded in the artist’s inspirations and narrative mission that is, above all, tantalizing. It is hard not to crave more."[44] The Line of Best Fit contributor Paul Bridgewater called the album "thematically a reckoning of salvation and oppression, all played out across the battlefield of religion and love. It's an ambitious undertaking for a first album, but Anhedönia's success largely comes down to embracing the universal language of pop as her mother tongue and keeping a deft hand over all aspects of her work, as both songwriter and producer."[43]

Clash writer Oshen Douglas McCormick called it "a heart-wrenching collection of songs that urges the listener to give themselves over to this album as much as Ethel Cain gives herself over to you."[38]

Commercial Performance[]

Despite Preacher's Daughter's critical acclaim, the album initially failed to chart. Following years of building a dedicated fanbase, Anhedönia released a vinyl for the album in 2025. Between April 4 and April 10, the album sold 37,000 copies, landing at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top Album Sales chart. This milestone made Ethel Cain the first openly transgender artist to secure a top 10 position on the Billboard 200.

Artwork[]

Anhedönia revealed the official album artwork for her album Preacher's Daughter on March 20, 2022.[57] On May 18, 2022, the singer shared two alternate versions of the cover and revealed that the artwork was shot by her sister, Delilah Dolimiere.[58] In June 2022, Anhedönia shared Preacher's Daughter demos with two unique covers, one of which was taken back in 2018 when she was releasing music under the moniker White Silas.[59]

Visuals for the album were posted by Anhedönia and her team during the rollout for Preacher's Daughter on social media. Some photos appeared in press. The Preacher's Daughter visuals were the first collaboration between Silken Weinberg and Anhedönia, who met in summer of 2021. Weinberg shared more photos from the Preacher's Daughter shoot, specifically the second look, to congratulate Anhedönia on her Top 10 placement on the Billboard 200 in 2025.[60]

Speculated[]

The creation date of these songs is uncertain due to the limited information, but it is speculated to have been made around the time this album was created.

  • Antebellum Available — Described as an outtake from Anhedönia's "debut record," which was a term to describe Preacher's Daughter up until release.
  • Fuck Me Eyes Available — Likely was once intended for this album, as Anhedönia stated she scrapped it from multiple projects. Later released as the second single off Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You.
