Hayden Silas Anhedönia, professionally known as Ethel Cain, is an American singer-songwriter, born on March 24, 1998, in Tallahassee, Florida. First coming into the music scene under the names Atlas and White Silas, Anhedönia started recording music in 2013, recording an unreleased album inspired by her 'idol' at the time Florence Welch. She started recording music again in 2016—recording the track "The Altar"—which would evolve into her first full-length release Colossus (2017), under Atlas. She continued to record under various aliases before adopting Ethel Cain in 2019.
After experimenting and releasing many projects under different alias, Anhedönia started using the Ethel Cain moniker in 2019, releasing many EPs prior to her debut record, Preacher's Daughter, which would rise the singer into popularity with it's dark themes of intergenerational trauma, domestic violence, substance abuse, and poverty, themes generally present in Anhedönia's body of works. Anhedönia has released six official projects under the Ethel Cain alias: Carpet Bed (2019), Golden Age (2019), Inbred (2021), Preacher's Daughter (2022), Perverts (2025), and Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You (2025).
Career[]
2013—2018: Career Beginnings—Atlas and White Silas[]
In 2013, Anhedönia wrote and recorded an album titled Synapse, consisting of twenty songs inspired by her idol Florence Welch. [1] From childhood Anhedönia received praise for her vocals—however she would not begin properly recording until 2016. She initially wanted to pursue a career in film and applied for Florida State University, although ended up not going to the university and rationalized that she may not have the budget to pursue film. After getting harsh advice from a friend, Anhedönia recorded the song "The Altar." She would soon go under the alias Atlas, releasing the three-track extended play (EP), Apologetics.[2] Another EP, under the alias Witchcest was intended to be released—however it was later scrapped. The lead single to the Witchcest EP "Just Snorted a Pill" was released on September 28, 2017.[3]
Beginning from June 21, 2017, Anhedönia started recording for her initial debut studio album, under the Atlas name.[4] Colossus would soon be born, and the lead single "Virginity" would be released on Anhedönia. Two more singles would follow: "Sacrilege" and "Hospital Beds." The album was released on October 27, 2017, and Anhedönia posted a foreword detailing her process while writing the album.[4] After releasing Colossus, Anhedönia started working on three projects: Covers, Pantheon, and Nazir-all three of which were later scrapped. While working on Pantheon, Anhedönia recorded "Hospital Beds II" initially planning it to be on the album. However, she felt as if the song was meant to be separate from Pantheon, and started recording for another project, Arcane Vessels.[5] Arcane Vessels released on March 22, 2018, now under 'White Silas. Like before Anhedönia posted a foreword detailing her process behind the album.[4] Anhedönia changed her stage name as a result of her seeing the popularity of the word 'Atlas' within musical spaces.[5] Arcane Vessels was meant to be a bridge between Colossus and Pantheon. Pantheon continued development and the lead single "Shrines" was released in spring 2018. Another album started being recorded around this time titled Black Genesis.[6] In 2018 while searching for a sample she found one which inspired her to create the song "A House in Nebraska." This would lead her to take a shift in her musical career, creating the Ethel Cain Cinematic Universe.[7] Pantheon and Black Genesis were eventually scrapped afterwards.
Once she scrapped the two albums, Anhedönia began officially working on her 2018 EP under the White Silas name, Sad Music for Sad People, mostly compiled of songs she had recorded over the summer. She worked on the EP from June to August of 2018, releasing Sad Music for Sad People on September 15, 2018. Two tracks off the EP would later be featured on the album Preacher's Daughter: "A House in Nebraska" and "Strangers."[8] In that same year, Anhedönia met singer and producer Aelyx. They released two EPs: Nightmares (2018) and Mourning After (2019). Aeylx also released two singles in collaboration with Anhedönia: "Drain Me" and "Away From U." Anhedönia described meeting with him as a pivotal moment, saying he helped her continue with music after initially wanting to retire.[9] In December 2018, Le Passeur released the song "Gegoria Cotton" made in collaboration with Anhedönia exclusively to her Bandcamp account, originally intended to be featured on their seemingly scrapped joint album Dusty Attic Hyms. Mourning After would be Anhedönia's last release as White Silas, and she would change her stage name to Ethel Cain. White Silas was described by Anhedönia as her "scatterbrained test run" before continuing on with Ethel Cain.[9]
2019—2021: Carpet Bed, Golden Age, and Inbred EPs[]
On August 2, 2019, Anhedönia released her debut single under the Ethel Cain name "Bruises." The single was later taken down for unknown reasons. Anhedönia's debut EP under Ethel Cain Carpet Bed released a month later, featuring acoustic instrumentation. On August 30, 2019, while opening for her friend Nicole Dollanganger in Chicago, Anhedönia debuted several then-unreleased tracks—among them was "Sunday Morning" and "Golden Age," the latter of which she confirmed onstage as the title track of her upcoming EP.[10] On November 26, 2019, Canadian label Homie Shit Magazine confirmed that they would be distributing Anhedönia's second EP on December 1, 2019.[11] Golden Age was released in 2019, inspired by her own experiences with a first real love that she faced in that year. The EP was released via physical and digital means on December 1, 2019, with the physical releases including three bonus tracks.[12][13] On January 18, 2020, Anhedönia released the single "A Portrait of My Love on Her Knees."
In 2020, after releasing her second EP, Anhedönia released two compilation albums: Unreleased and Unreleased II, featuring, as implied by the names, unreleased tracks. During this time Anhedönia also started recording her third EP under Ethel Cain, seeking to escape the Anhedönia of the "sad girl trope" she had been "shoehorned" in before. In July, Anhedönia signed a deal with publishing company Prescription Songs alongside AWAL—creating her imprint label Daughters of Cain—and Amigo Records.[14] In November, Hayden traveled to Florida to collaborate with producer and friend, Aelyx. However, after returning to Indiana, she scrapped most of what had been done and quickly wrote a new batch of songs over the course of just a few weeks.[15] "Michelle Pfeiffer", featuring Lil Aaron, was released on February 11, 2021 as lead single for Inbred. The release served as a "thank you" to Lil Aaron for helping her sign with Prescription Songs. The single was featured on Billboard[16], The Fader[17], Nylon,[18]and Pitchfork.[19] The following singles, "Crush" and "Unpunishable," were released on March 18 and April 15 of that year; "Crush" recivied traction from press thank's to it's poppier sound. The EP was released on April 23, 2021, on digital platforms and analog formats which featured four bonus tracks—marking her last release under the label Homie Shit Magazine.
2022—2023: Preacher's Daughter[]
Since 2018, Anhedönia has mentioned working on her debut record under the Ethel Cain moniker. In 2021 press interviews for Inbred Anhedönia mentioned her debut album, stating she was "excited to finish [it]." Late that year, Anhedönia confirmed she only a couple months left on album production. On March 8, 2022, Anhedönia released a cover of the song "Everytime" by Britney Spears as part of Spotify Singles, in honor of International Women's Day. On March 17, 2022, Anhedönia released the single "Gibson Girl" and on the same day announced her debut studio album, Preacher's Daughter and released on May 12, 2022. Preacher's Daughter is a concept album that creates a narrative centered around the character Ethel Cain. The album would rise the singer into popularity, being well-received by critics. The album was marked on the website, AOTY, as a "must hear album," with Ben Tipple of DIY writing that Anhedönia "has an unparalleled power to drag you into her world" and called her "an autobiographical embodiment of escape, and of a fresh start."[20] The album was also preceded by the release of the singles "Strangers" on April 7 and "American Teenager" on April 21, the latter receiving a music video on July 21. In support of the album, Anhedönia embarked on The Freezer Bride Tour in 2022 and the Blood Stained Blonde Tour in 2023. She was also an opening act at one concert of Florence and the Machine's Dance Fever Tour and Caroline Polachek's Spiraling Tour. On July 21, 2023, she released "Famous Last Words (An Ode to Eaters)," inspired by Luca Guadagnino's film Bones and All, for the project 1017 ALYX 9SM. It was included in 1017 ALYX 9SM's debut compilation album. That same year, Anhedönia featured on the tracks "Dying Star" by Ashnikko and "222" by Vyva Melinkolya from the albums Weedkiller and Unbecoming, respectively.
2024—Present: Perverts and Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You[]
- To be completed
In 2022, Anhedönia started working on the follow-up to Preacher's Daughter, Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You. Anhedönia stated in press interviews that she was ready to move on to other projects—more "mature" things as she described—although she felt as if she wanted to expand on Ethel Cain's story. In press interviews from 2022 and 2024, Anhedönia showed interest in exploring ambient music; in an interview for Vice, Anhedönia stated she was planning to "explore a new sound" with her next project. In the summer of 2024, Anhedönia released limited-edition pop-up merchandise in New York City, including posters bearing the title "Perverts." During this time, she also performed the tracks "Punish" and “Amber Waves" live on The Childish Behavior Tour, the latter she had previously released a snippet of on Instagram. In July, Anhedönia confirmed that her next project would not be related to the Ethel Cain Cinematic Universe. On September 30, 2024, Anhedönia cleared her Instagram account and changed her profile picture to mark the beginning of a rollout for the EP. The release of Anhedönia's fourth EP Perverts was officially announced on Anhedönia's Instagram account on October 14, 2024. It's lead single, "Punish," was released on November 1, 2024, alongside an accompanying music video. Perverts was released on January 8, 2025, and a music video for the track, "Vacillator," premiered on the same date.
In 2025, Anhedönia announced she would embark on her fourth tour. During this time, Anhedönia officially revealed the title of Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You in a now-deleted article. She also updated her banner on Live Nation UK, appearing to be of the characters Ethel Cain and Willoughby Tucker. The album was later announced along with its cover being revealed. Immediately following the album's release, Anhedönia posted on her Instagram story that she is back to being an independent artist, after having been a signed artist for five years.
Other Ventures[]
Anhedönia initially wanted to pursue a career in film and applied for Florida State University whilst finding liberation in the theater program of a local community college. She ended up not going to the university and rationalized that she may not have the budget to pursue film. Reckoning with this, Anhedönia decided to pursue music as it was a cheaper option to still pursue a career in the arts. Whilst living on her own, Anhedönia also applied for a nail technician job. On a now-deleted tumblr post, Anhedönia stated on her time working as a nail technician:
| “ | It was chill! the hours were long and I spent them in a room with no windows so that was a little stir-crazy but I was very good at it so I would zone out and work on my stories and ideas in my head the whole time. A lot of Preacher's Daughter was conceptualized while staring at toenails. | ” | |

Main article: Ethel Cain July 9 Statement, Austin's Statement
“This was a chapter of my life I look back at shamefully. I am not proud of my actions, and I have done my best to bury it as I feel strongly that no good can come from it. As I move forward through my life, I aim to use my platform for good, for change, and for progress. I believe it’s important to atone not through words alone, but through actions. All this being said; all of these things resurfacing are not the actions of a well-meaning individual concerned by something they discovered easily and casually on the internet. These are screenshots obtained through extensive digging, hacking, and cooperative effort amongst a group of individuals who do not care who else is hurt by witnessing this media as long as I am ultimately hurt the worst in the end. I’ve known that all of these separate pieces of my past have been found and hoarded over the past couple years as I’ve been tipped off in various ways. This massive smear campaign has been a long time in the making, waiting for the right moment to be unleashed, and now it finally has.”
Starting from 2023, Anhedönia has received criticism for multiple social media posts and images, including claims of of racism,[22][23][24] glorification of incest,[25] child pornography, sexual abuse towards Dollie Kyarn's dog, the copying and monetization of Amber Hagerman's missing poster,[26] and fetishization of the female experience.[27][28] In July 2025, after allegations against Anhedönia's boyfriend Austin Clark came out on her sub-Reddit,[29] all the mentioned social media posts gained visibility on social media and on her own Spotify page (which was hacked), prompting fans and general public to ask Hayden for an explanation. On July 9, 2025, Anhedönia responded to all the accusations about her on a Google Document, which also addressed her boyfriend briefly. She apologized for the curiouscat screenshots in which in which she admitted to using racial slurs and had responded "build that wall!" to a post mocking Hispanic people. She stated: "I was entirely aware of what I was saying and that was why I said it." and "After moving out of my parents’ house, I fell into a subculture online that prioritized garnering attention at all costs." She did not apologize however for the the drawing deemed to be child porngraphy by users—she revealed that she had been raped at the time of the drawing, nor for "sexual abuse toward animals"—a claim birthed from a picture of her topless with a dog, and for "fetishiz[ing] … the female experience". She as well explained that the missing poster for the character Ethel Cain modeled after Amber Hagerman's missing poster was not meant as fetishization, stating she was in a rush and picked a template that "would seem period accurate for the character." She made apologies towards Hamerman's family stating she "should have done [her] research," although concluded that the allegation of fetishization was "egregious and ridiculous." She affirmed in her response that she is "not the creator of child pornography," is not a pedophile, a zoophile, or a "porn-addicted incest fetishist" and described the allegations as a "transphobic/otherwise targeted smear campaign". Clark later made a document himself in which he denied the allegations against him.
Anhedönia has also been criticized for indirectly working with Dr. Luke, after she signed to his label Prescription Songs in 2020. Dr. Luke is a producer, known for a legal battle with singer Kesha due to sexual abuse allegations. Anhedönia claimed she didn't know who owned the label before she signed: "I was unemployed and it was a pandemic. I didn’t have the option to turn down money."[30] Since she was signed to his label, Anhedönia met with him briefly and they tried working on a song, but she did not enjoy the experience, saying it "sucks."[31]
On August 13, 2025, Lana Del Rey teased the thirteenth track from her upcoming tenth studio album, tentatively titled Stove. The song, titled "All About Ethel," was written about her negative experiences with Anhedönia and is described as a "diss track." Originally written in 2022, the song reportedly stems from Del Rey's relationship with Donoghue and Anhedönia's past remarks about her. In a now-deleted Instagram comment, Del Rey claimed that the inspiration for the track came from edits Anhedönia had allegedly made of her next to "unflattering creatures and cartoon characters," intended as a crude joke about Del Rey's weight gain and appearance. Del Rey also accused Anhedönia of attempting to insert herself into her private life. That same day, Anhedönia revealed that Del Rey had blocked her on Instagram.
| “ | I didn’t know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at. Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed. | ” | |

Personal Life[]
Early Life[]
Anhedönia was born on March 24, 1998, in Tallahassee, Florida, and raised in Perry, Florida, as the eldest child to to a Southern Baptist family—her father was a truck driver and deacon; her mother was a part-time clerk who sang with her in the church. Choir was Anhedönia's first entry way into music. Anhedönia describes her childhood as "riding around on the four-wheeler, digging for crawdads in the creek, picking sand spurs out of her feet." In 2018, she released the short track "Perry" on Tumblr as an homage to those early memories. She left the church at sixteen, a few years after being ostracized for being gay at age twelve. She explained that because of the judgment surrounding her sexuality, it felt like it was her "versus" her town—she was judged by neighboring adults and always felt like "the odd one out." Anhedönia stated her therapist—arranged by her parents—was the first person to reassure her that she wasn't "going to hell."
Throughout her childhood and adolescence Anhedönia was not permitted to go online, listen to non-Christian music, or pick out her own clothes. During this time, Anhedönia would secretly browse Tumblr, discovering visual and musical media. "Suddenly there was a whole new world of people who were queer, people who weren’t die-hard Republicans," she stated to The Cut. By age eighteen, Anhedönia had moved out of her parents' house and begun her career in music. At the time, she identified as non-binary.[34] Reflecting on this period, she stated: "I was too scared to come out as a trans woman 'cause I was dreading the thought of having to come out for a second time after how it went the first time." In 2017, shortly before turning twenty, Anhedönia shaved her head and promised herself she would revert to her former male identity in an attempt to please her family.[35][36] However, she later expressed deep regret over this decision, describing it as a period of misery.[36][35] On her twentieth birthday, Anhedönia publicly came out as a trans woman in a Facebook post, having already shared her identity with her fanbase beforehand. The only other trans person she knew at the time had given her his doctor's contact information. On November 9, 2018,[37] she walked into the clinic to begin her medical transition. As of now, Anhedönia has stated that her relationship with her parents has improved, noting that they are more supportive of her identity than they were in the past. Specifically regarding her mother, Juliet Horner, Anhedönia has stated that she is supportive of both her and her artwork. Reflecting on their past, Anhedönia said on her mother: "She thinks she was just trying to parent me the way that she best saw fit, but for me, it was like I was being tortured."
Name[]
Anhedönia’s name has evolved over time. Her birth name—once shared on a now-deleted Tumblr side blog—was passed down from her great-great-grandfather. She later changed her first name to Hayden after seeing a character with that name and wanting it for herself, citing “artistic reasons” for the change. At one point, she considered adopting the last name Atlas, but ultimately felt she didn't resonate with it; her full name at the time was Hayden Apollo Atlas. Atlas was also used as her stage name from 2016 to 2018. In 2017, while reading about bipolar disorder on Wikipedia, she came across the word Anhedonia. Already in search of a new last name, she was drawn to its meaning and felt it reflected the hedonistic lifestyle she aspired to achieve at the time. Silas, her chosen middle name, completes her full name: Hayden Silas Anhedönia.
Health and Diagnoses[]
Anhedönia is autistic. She initially believed she had bipolar disorder, but after recognizing striking similarities between herself and an autistic friend, she decided to see a specialist. This led to her autism diagnosis. Anhedönia has spoken about being autistic has influenced her artistry, stating:
| “ | I'm autistic, and so that definitely heightens sensory everything. [...] I think that's why I have so much crossover between media, because it's like, there's never just one sense. Music is not just something you listen to. Film is not just something you watch. You get all these senses from all these things. When I'm producing music, I literally feel sometimes I can see it. I have to close my eyes, and I imagine the bass is the earth. I imagine the synths are rising up next to you, and I imagine the vocals are high in the sky, right in the center. I close my eyes and picture the sound around me – that's how I mix. | ” |
Relationships and Sexuality[]
Housing[]
Anhedönia has moved several times throughout her life. During her childhood, she initially lived in a single-wide trailer. Her family later relocated across town to her father's cousin's property, where they moved into a double-wide trailer. They eventually returned to the original single-wide trailer for a short period, around the time her sister, Delilah Dolimiere, was born.[39] According to Anhedönia, the house was infested with roaches when they moved back in. After that, the family briefly stayed at her grandparents' home, a three-bedroom trailer. Later on, her parents purchased a new house back across town, near the original trailer. Anhedönia spent most of her childhood in this home. She recalled that the backyard had an old shed that was "completely falling apart."[39]
At eighteen, Anhedönia moved out of her parents' house and into an apartment complex in Tallahassee, Florida. She later moved to another apartment in the same area. Afterward, she lived in a car lot, and then in a duplex with her friend at the time, E DEATH. The duplex featured two bedrooms—one of which was only accessible by a narrow staircase—a bathroom, a closet, and a single small window.[39]
In August 2020, Anhedönia relocated to a church building in Indiana—also referred to as "The Sanctuary" or "The Chapel." She remained there until July 2021, when she moved to a house located in South Alabama—also referred to as "Pearly May's."[40] Anhedönia had previously expressed a desire to live in South Alabama, such as by titling an early demo of "God's Country" "South Alabama." Around this time, she also voiced dissatisfaction with living in Indiana, noting that there was little to do. At one point, due to complications with her relocation plans, Anhedönia considered returning to Florida, although this ultimately did not happen. Anhedönia stayed in "Pearly May's" until November 2021, when she move to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On November 14, 2022, Anhedönia posted an image of herself packing up for the move.[41] Anhedönia would later relocate back to Tallahassee, Florida, partly to be closer to family and friends.[42]
Religious Beliefs[]
Sociopolitical Views and Activism[]
- To be completed
In a 2018 interview on Among The Steeples, Anhedönia expressed concern that much of the activism she observed felt "skewed" and performative, which she had perviously complained about on social media, partially with so-called "social justice warrior" or "woke" culture at the time. She criticized certain forms of advocacy as being more about social signaling than genuine efforts to improve society, and suggested that many people were not fully informed about the issues they supported. She also felt that some discussions—particularly regarding transgender women—were disproportionately emphasized over more pressing concerns.[5] In a 2019 Twitter post, she reiterated these views, critiquing what she perceived as self-victimization from transgender women.[43] From January to April 2021, Anhedönia went on a road trip. In an interview with The Fader, she explained that the experience gave her deeper insight into the backgrounds of different people and how those experiences shaped her perspective. "I fully feel like racism, homophobia, and transphobia are all rooted in classism; if you don't know what it was like to grow up rough, you really don’t get it until you see it," she said. In another interview with Artist Decoded, Anhedönia shared similar views she had previously expressed on Among The Steeples, stating that she felt there was a cultural tendency to shame people for discussing controversial subjects. She explained that part of her motivation for creating the podcast Grandmama's Kitchen was to push back against that environment and encourage open conversation in a more obscure setting. Speaking about her family, she acknowledged her love for them while also expressing frustration with what she described as "close-mindedness" or a kind of "blindness" regarding identity and race.[44]
The themes of Anhedönia's song "American Teenager," from her debut album Preacher's Daughter express an anti-war sentiment, political and religious disillusionment, and criticisms of United States' gun culture. It was included by former President of the United States Barack Obama in his list of favorite songs of 2022, which prompted surprise from Anhedönia that a former president had included her "anti-war, anti-patriotism fake pop song" in his end-of-year list. In 2023, she released a song on SoundCloud titled "من النهر" ('From the River'), a reference to the pro-Palestinian phrase "from the river to the sea."[45] In 2024, Anhedönia showed support for Luigi Mangione, suspected of killing the UnitedHealthcare chief executive officer (CEO) Brian Thompson. She petitioned for the killing of more high-profile CEOs.[46] In response, media outlet Fox News called for a boycott of her music.[46] In response, Anhedönia made a post on her now-deleted tumblr blogpost, stating: "I find it funny that conservatives try to paint me calling for the death and destruction of multi-billionaire CEOs as some radical 'woke liberal' standpoint. As if that even has anything to do with politics, especially in this era of surface level circus politics."[46]
During the campaign 2024 Presidential elections for the United States of America, Anhedönia agreed with singer-songwriter Chappell Roan on her issues with both Republicans and Democrats, stating herself that she found the lack of acceptance for criticism on Kamala Harris as "stupid." Anhedönia cited Harris' stance on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict as a source for her own criticisms against her. Anhedönia also expressed disdain for Donald Trump, standing against his optics. In the wake of election results, Anhedönia made a series of social media posts, petitioning for the American people to build community, trust, and give back as opposed to believing in a individualist mindset and having distain for other individuals.[47]

Well, here we are. It's dark and it's sad but it's no surprise. American runs on upholding the "traditional" values of power and control over the masses. Your government does not care about you! At All! Just know that. This is a fundamental truth we have to acknowledge to move forward. I have been saying it and I will keep saying it but COMMUNITY is the most important thing right now. The divide and conquer method of internet propaganda and algorithmic hatred of other minorities or even your own has worked far too well and you have to make a conscious effort now to combat it. This shit is not a joke, you HAVE to take it seriously. "I don't owe anyone anything" is not a mindset you can have anymore. American individualism will be the death of us if we don't get it together.Help wherever you can. Give whatever of yourself you can spare. Whether it's staying up late to be a shoulder to cry on, five dollars for a gofundme as you scroll past, or driving a cousin's sister in law 4 states over for an abortion when she needs it. You have to be a human. You cannot give into apathy. You have to reach out and touch everyone around you and have faith that they, in return, will do the same for you. I don't care if it sounds dramatic or doom-y, but not preparing for worst case scenario is an unwise decision. Get off your phones and get out into the real world and remember what it feels like to be a person who is part of a larger body of people who love and bleed like you do. We cannot fall so far down the rabbit hole of our own built-up society and forget that in the end, we're all just village of people trying to help each other survive the winter. We are still animals, and social ones at that. We need each other. It's so easy to give in to the culture of unmitigated hatred and disdain for each other, I get it. It's the conclusion I immediately what to jump to every time I get frustrated. But it does nothing but continue to propagate the violence. Do not give in to the reactionary bait on the internet. Instead, turn your frustration to the real world and find a way to help. Cook dinner for your friends who are having a hard time. LOVE. Find every bit of love in your heart and foster in and lay it on everyone you can. VOTE in your local elections. Take pride and take charge in your local community. It may be said as nauseam but you must truly become the change you want to see in the world. [...]
