Carpet Bed is the debut extended play (EP) by Hayden Anhedönia, released under her current stage name Ethel Cain. The EP was initially released independently on September 13, 2019, through digital and streaming platforms.
This marked Anhedönia's first official release as Ethel Cain, following her discarding the alias White Silas. Carpet Bed was later re-released through her own imprint under AWAL, Daughters of Cain.
Background[]
Development[]
The project is believed to have begun in 2018. During that year, Anhedönia released the song "Growing Pains," along with a demo version of "Antlers" titled "Cedar."[1] In 2019, she released the original version of the track "Misuse Oh,"[2] with all three songs later appearing on the EP.
Beginning in May 2019, it was stated that Anhedönia planned to release another EP following Mourning After.[3][4] In August of that year, she reintroduced herself under the name Ethel Cain and released the single "Bruises." All tracks on the EP have acoustic instrumentation and were based on Anhedönia's personal experiences. When describing the EP, Anhedönia referred to it as a "small collection of songs."[5]
Remastered Version[]
In 2020, Anhedönia reportedly shared plans to remaster her first two EPs released as Ethel Cain, Carpet Bed and Golden Age. However, the project was never finalized. A remastered version of the track "Dog Days" was previewed during an Instagram livestream on September 22, 2021.[6] On October 24, 2022, Anhedönia confirmed that the remastering plans had been scrapped, stating that she had "much new stuff to work on" and did not have enough time to devote to the remasters.
Release and Promotion[]
Carpet Bed was officially released on September 13, 2019. Though the EP received little promotion, Anhedönia marked its release with a single promotional post on her now-deleted Twitter account, captioned: "sleepin on the carpet again."[7] The EP's cover features a childhood photograph of Anhedönia.
